Why use a leased line rather than fibre broadband?

Whilst our Fibre Share full fibre broadband is reliable, convenient and inexpensive, its lower price point necessitates compromising on speed and repair guarantees. Fibre Share is well suited to smaller teams or small shops, to support digital telephony voice and video, EPOS till systems, PDQ card payment terminals, small CCTV and general administrative work.

Fibre Solo leased lines are the gold standard for business, offering guaranteed bandwidths, fastest uploads, 100% uptime resilience options and prioritised repairs. This is a better fit for larger offices (10+ employees or lots of devices), heavier bandwidth users, sub-tenanted properties providing managed Internet access, and hospitality venues where guest wifi is offered.

Leased Line

Best performance, guaranteed:

  • A fibre physically dedicated to you (not shared)
  • Giving no contention for service
  • Always the top speed, 100% of the time

Highest service levels:

  • Complete installation flexibility
  • 6 hour repair target, every hour of every day
  • Future-proofed fibre, but longer lead times

VS

Full Fibre Broadband

Low cost but contended:

  • A fibre backbone shared with neighbours
  • Up to 1:32 backbone contention
  • Usable speeds may reduce at peak times

Simpler install and slower repairs:

  • Basic installation with limited customisation
  • Repairs typically starting at next business day
  • Shorter lead times, but fewer upgrade options

The Installation Process

1. Planning

We'll work with you to determine best speeds and resilience for your needs, capture basic details about the premises, and provide time/cost estimates.

2. Survey

If needed, a surveyor will visit your premises to design and agree installation details, tailored to your requirements and preferences.

3. Permissions

If required, permissions will be obtained from you, the land or building owner. If work outside is required, a council permit may need to be obtained too.

4. Build

Infrastructure is built (internally and/or externally), dedicated fibre cabling is installed and finally equipment will be fitted and tested. You're ready to go!

Frequently Asked Questions

To help you get started, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer to your question, please contact the Gwhizz Networks team.

Question mark

Leased lines are dedicated fibre installations from your premises all the way to the local exchange building, whereas broadband is connected only to a shared node (technically called a "splitter") in your street. Whilst you benefit from higher guaranteed speeds with a Fibre Solo leased line, there is much more work involved in delivering the service. On top of that, leased lines are accompanied by a much more stringent service level agreement with faster 24/7 repair times — the highest quality service for when reliable connectivity is key.

It is impossible to give a meaningful figure without checking your address, which is why the Gwhizz Networks pre-sales planning is some of the most advanced in the industry. Lead times depend on whether your building already has fibre we can use (can be 4-6 weeks lead time), whether new cabling or infrastructure build is required (can take several months), whether a landlord wayleave or council permit is required (legal processes can cause significant delay), or potentially a very long time (and cost) if no fibre is available in your area at all. The majority of orders are completed within 1-4 months, but it's best to contact us with your address so we can look into it in detail.

Fibre Solo carries a minimum contract term of 12 months, but many customers choose to take a 3 year term to benefit from discounts. Since Internet access can be the most important utility for a business, installation of a high quality leased line should be considered as a long term accompaniment to the office rent — an essential part of the furniture!

All Gwhizz Networks services are delivered with an Ethernet (RJ45 or SM/MM fibre port) hand-off and without any other routing, firewalling or wifi equipment as standard. This helps to reduce e-waste, because most of our customers already have routers, or will be accompanying their Internet access with our managed network and wifi service where we will scope, procure and install the most appropriate enterprise-grade hardware. During pre-sales our Whizzes will be happy to check the suitability of any existing router you have and/or discuss a suitable alternative or replacement.
