Full Fibre vs. Copper/Hybrid-Fibre Broadband

Full fibre broadband is the latest future-proofed technology in the broadband industry, offering faster and much more reliable connections than older past-copper "fibre" services. It completely eliminates the need for copper wiring between subscribers and the telephone exchange, meaning that users can enjoy predictable speeds, ultrafast Gigabit connections, improved reliability and lower latencies.

Gwhizz Networks offers both Full Fibre Broadband (Fibre Share) which is a lower-cost contended service for smaller teams, and Leased Lines (Fibre Solo) which are dedicated fibres for higher guaranteed bandwidths for more demanding businesses.

Question mark

Traditional broadband (even misleadingly marketed "fibre broadband") suffers from poor performance because it uses old copper telephone lines up to 3km in length into the premises — and the longer the cable gets, the worse the performance. Full Fibre uses optical (glass) fibre which gives predictable speeds regardless of distance, and is weather-proof and interference-free so suffers fewer faults.

Home broadband is designed to be low cost to deliver and maintain at high volumes. To keep costs low, bandwidth contention (sharing ratios) are high, repair times are longer, and customer service can be under-resourced. With business broadband, a loss of service can cost your business money, so it's critical to use a provider such as Gwhizz Networks which manages their network to guarantee performance, and prioritises support 24/7 for when you need it most.

Businesses have more demanding requirements than home users. Regardless of speed, most companies consume more data (network resources) per day than the average domestic residence, for two main reasons: (1) businesses tend to have larger numbers of employee and guest users and connected devices, and (2) businesses trade for 9-18 hours per day whereas home usage tends to be for only a few hours per evening and across weekends. Also a good business broadband provider such as Gwhizz Networks will offer 24/7 support, well beyond a typical residential service. Overall, it costs more to deliver a reliable business service.

Full fibre broadband gives you the benefits of reliability and fast peak speeds, but with lower costs by sharing available bandwidth, having slower uploads, and with a reduced support agreement. Leased lines are the gold standard for business, offering guaranteed bandwidths, fast uploads and a 24/7 prioritised support with 6 hour target repair times. Fibre Share is well suited to small teams or shops, but Fibre Solo is ideal for larger offices, more demanding use cases and hospitality venues where a larger number of guests use wifi.
